My absolute most favorite quote from Keats would be “Philosophy will clip an angel's wings.” It is my opinion that when Keats wrote this he had a very concise and direct meaning behind it. Keats was not too fond of many new scientific ideas coming out around his time. He mocked Sir. Edward Newton openly, and wrote many works about his feelings on the issues. Keats was a religious man who gave great recognition and credit to his God. Being a romantic poet he wrote mainly of nature and his connection to God through nature.
Keats saw many of the new ideas and beliefs as the end of Christianity. This quote is saying that the new ideas will be the end of the Christian world. He uses the angel to symbolize the Christian belief. By clipping the wings the angel would not be able to fly. Keats believed that with the new ideas Christianity would not be able to “fly” as well.
In a way Keats was right, since science has explained so much the wonder of nature and other mysteries has become less and less attractive to people. Almost anything can be explained through a scientific point of view.
Much wonder and awe of earth’s simple beauties have been lost. Appreciation for the simple things has dwindled. All Keats was trying to say was he didn’t want to lose all of that. All the love he felt for the things unexplained. With the new scientific developments of his time I’m sure his faith was shaken. He must have been scared.
He didn’t want the future to be deprived of their right to be close with God. He didn’t want science to explain away so much that there be no more credit given to God. He didn’t want his God to be pushed to the back and no one believe.
